MARPOL 73/78 Annex 1 & 2

This training program shall provide shipboard personnel an understanding regarding important provisions of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from ships, 1973 as amended by the Protocol of 1978 (MARPOL 73/78) concerning regulations for the Prevention of Pollution by Oil (Annex I) and Regulations for the revention of Pollution by Noxious Liquid Substances in Bulk (Annex II).


Objectives:

Those successfully completing this course will thereby be enabled to appreciate the concern about pollution of the marine environment, understand the impact of oil pollution and the international rules aimed at preventing such pollution insofar as this is caused by machinery space operations. The course helps trainees to correctly identify the categories of noxious liquid substances offered for shipment to take proper account of the potential impact on the marine environment of pollution by noxious liquid substances, understand the construction features required of chemical tankers both in normal operations and in emergencies and ensures that correct use is made of the equipment with which chemical tankers are required to be provided. The trainees will be able to correctly apply the principles and procedures and ensure correct use of the appropriate equipment involved in the prevention of marine pollution to effectively protect the marine environment against pollution by noxious liquid substances carried in bulk in ships in which they (the trainees) serve. And most of all, avoid ship delays in port arising from port State action.

Entry Standards:

Trainees entering the course should be familiar with tanker ships and whose duties require them to be acquainted with the provisions for the prevention of oil pollution from ships or have knowledge of and experience in the carriage of liquid chemicals in bulk, trainees in this category could include masters and deck officers serving in chemical tankers who have not completed the specialized training programme referred to in STCW regulation V/2(6), and those personnel who are in effective charge of shore activities associated with loading or unloading chemical tankers.


Certificate of Training:

On successful completion of the course and active participation in group work, a document shall be issued certifying that the holder has completed a course of training in MARPOL 73/78 Annex 1&2.
