CONTROL ENGINEERING


This Module Course is designed to comply with the requirements of the 1978 International Convention of Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping as amended in 1995 (STCW ’95) particularly on the provisions stated there in for Function 1: Marine Engineering at the Management Level. The aforesaid requirements are further detailed in the STCW Code Table AIII/ 2, and this module course shall address particular requirements on Electrical, Electronics and Control Engineering.


Objectives:

At the end of this course, trainees should be able to: 1. explain the principles of Ohm’s and Kirchoff’s Laws 2. explain the principles of electromagnetism; 3. explain the Control theory and principles; 4. explain and describe the principles applied on electrical and electronic control and equipment 5. understand the functions of A.C. and D.C. Generators and motors; 6. understand the operation of alternators, D.C. generators, A.C and D.C. motors; 7. know and operate the different control systems of applicable machinery; 8. demonstrate single and parallel operation of Generators; 9. demonstrate rectification of common faults in the electrical generation plants and know the action necessary to prevent possible damages.


Training Methodology:

Classroom instructions, computer-based Instructions and Dynamic real time simulation.


Entry Standards:

This course is primarily intended for successful examinees in the National examination administered by the PRC at the Management level of the Marine Engineering function, aiming to gain Certificate of Competency as Second (2 nd ) and Chief Marine Engine Officers in manned or periodically manned engine room.


Certificate of Training:

Successful Trainees shall be awarded with certificates of completion, attesting to their successful completion of the course, in partial fulfillment of the requirements set forth by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) for the eventual issuance of the Certificate of Competency.
