Radar Navigation, Radar Plotting and use of ARPA

This course provides training and guidance in the basic theory and use of radar and automatic radar plotting aids (ARPA) to officers in charge of a navigational watch where each candidate will have gained knowledge on how radar information is obtained and displayed the limitaion and accuracy of that information. This course also provides awareness on the needs to maintain continuing plot of ship targets which may post a potential threat of collision and the ability to derive the necessary information to prevent a close quarters situation on accordance with COLREG.


Objective:

The trainee successfully completing this course will recognize when the radar should be in use, will select a suitable mode and range setting for the circumstances, will be able to set controls for optimal performance, and will be aware of the limitations of the equipment on detecting targets and in terms of accuracy.

STCW Reference:

Regulation II/1, paragraph 2.5, Section AII/1, Regulation II/2, paragraph 2.2, Section II/2, Section AVIII Part 31, Table AII/1, Section 1.3 and Table AII/2, Section 2.6 of the STCW78 Convention, as amended in 1995.


Training  Methodology:

Classroom instructions, Computer Based Instructions and Dynamic Real Time Simulation.


Certificate of Training:

Shall be given to each candidate who successfully completed the course and passed the assessment.


Entry Requirements:

This course is principally intended for candidates for certification as officers in charge of a navigational watch. Before entering the course, trainees should have completed a minimum period of one year at sea and preferable have gained some experience of bridge watchkeeping.
