According to Wikipidia, “Resource Management is the efficient and effective deployment of an organization’s resources when they are needed.” In the tree planting activity of Newsim done in Sariaya, Quezon the following resources were available for the successful completion of the project: human resources, tools, time and the Mahogany seedlings.
The group were divided into four teams, two groups was compose of 7 members while the other two has 6 members only, to equalize the players the excess member was appointed as video/photographer. Each member of the team were assigned a task to do, they were either designated as Team Captain, Administrator, Digger, Planter, Transporter, and Verifier. Although specific tasks were assigned to each member of the team, rotation or substitution of tasks were allowed except for the team Administrator. Other teams optimized their performance by maximizing rotation, substitution and relay.
Another type of resources is the tools needed for the tree planting like digging tool, spade, scissors, gloves, and meter to be use for measuring the distance of the tree from each other and from the perimeter fence which is 1.2 meters as stated in the rule. Some of the teams went beyond by using other resources not provided to them but were available such as ropes and hand made stakes.
Time also is a resource, in order for us to complete the project there must be time allotted to do it. There was a designated area for the starting point where everybody converged and at exactly 6am the go signal to plant and do their assigned task was given. And at exactly 7am the team Administrator whose task is to release seedlings to their team mates in accordance to the rule, stop doing so. It was noticeable and actually observed that the winning team maximized their time by NOT wasting time. Others were busy engaging themselves in arguments, talks and making noises.
The team with the most number of trees planted wins the game. How each team utilize these resources to their advantage has their own stories to tell, but one thing is certain the available resources were the same. Was the resource equal? In some aspect probably not, because factors like age, personality, character, physical capacity, skills, etc., differed in each team. Realistically true because every organization encounters this, how to deal with it is the important lesson that we learned from our tree planting activity.
